General Surgeon
A general surgeon is a medical doctor specializing in the surgical treatment of diseases, defects, and injuries of many areas of the body. After residency, general surgeons receive an additional 5 years of surgical training.
What Does a General Surgeon Do?
General surgeons perform a variety of routine operative procedures on the abdomen and organs; endocrine system; breast, skin and soft tissue; head and neck; and vascular system. Some of the surgeries commonly performed by general surgeons include: • Appendectomy
• Hernia repair
• Gallbladder surgeries
• Trauma, burns and acute care surgery
• Breast surgery
• Gastrointestinal and colorectal surgeries
• Hysterectomy
• Pediatric surgery
• Organ transplant
General surgeons must also possess a comprehensive clinical knowledge of a variety of diagnostics, advanced surgical procedures, and treatments including, but not limited to:
• Nutrition
• Epidemiology
• Shock and resuscitation
• Wound healing and infection
• Basic and advanced laparoscopic surgery
• Diagnostic endoscopy
• Radiologic and ultrasonic imagery
• Airway intubation
